Interview with Matt Mellinger: Understand GSC Data Limits & Use Holistic SEO To Win

Google may be lying to you. Here's how to get the data you need.

Howdy there Buckaroo,

I know it’s been a minute since my last send on the SEO Arcade’s #SEOBits Newsletter, but since I’ve become the host of the Unscripted SEO podcast, we’re hooked in now to get fantastic insights from these unscripted interviews with SEO heavy hitters like Kevin Indig, Rand Fishkin, Lilyray and more.

This week I spoke off the cuff with Matt Mellinger, co-founder of SEO Gets which is a KILLER tool for visualizing Google Search Console data that has personally saved me a TON of time.  and has shared some awesome insights from his journey as an agency owner and software developer.

Here’s a recap of the interview highlights:

1. Understanding Limitations

Google Search Console is powerful but not perfect. Matt’s team is working on case studies highlighting data discrepancies.

Did you know that exporting query data might only show 5-70% of actual clicks? In his experience the amount of data can vary depending on the size and volume of search traffic coming to your site. Ironically, my own blog post about GSC data being inaccurate will only show me FIVE queries for the 159 clicks for that time period.

2. Holistic SEO Approach

“There's an ego battle with design... Do you want a pretty site or a performing site?”

Balancing technical SEO with design is crucial.

For example, you might have a client who is eager to launch their custom built site, which is a SPA (Single Page Application), and they’re super excited on the developer side for the new functionality. But then when they launch, there are LITERALLY no links from page to page. They use a [Button] markup which Google cannot crawl, and so Google is served up all urls individually, with no internal links whatsoever!

3. SEO Gets Super Tool

“SEO Gets is basically a search console super tool... it's a Search Console API wrapper that does a really good job of bringing value to SEOs.” - Matt Mellinger

Features:

  • Discover trends and issues quickly.

  • Connect multiple Google Search Console profiles seamlessly.

  • Smooth data visualization with options for weekly or monthly views.

5. Focus on Pain Points

“If you spend this much money and get $10 back for every $1 spent, would you be interested?”

Matt emphasizes solving client pain points, like increasing revenue and generating leads. The reality is that clients need more revenue. You need to focus on ROI, and revenue to make SEO worthwhile.

Quote of the Interview:

"The SEO community as a whole is, I mean, there's buckets of people, it's very connected, whether you're white hat, black hat, somewhere in between agency owner, consultant, affiliate, like there's all these different like types of buckets, but there's very much community, a community and a network of SEOs."

This is also what I very much love about SEO. Send a DM, or email if you have an SEO challenge or want to guest on the Unscripted SEO podcast, I’d love to have a real conversation with ya.
