Create SERP Data Keyword Clusters By Hand

Keyword research doesn’t need to take hours. Here’s the simplest way to uncover keyword clusters based on Google’s OWN SERP data.

Decide on a “Seed Keyword”

After you have a chat with your sales team, your secretary, your support team, your product manager, your CEO, and if possible a client you really should be able to peg at LEAST one “core” keyword that hits the target for your product or service. Don’t worry that it might not be what 100% of people search for, just as close to the “center” of meaning that drives toward your product or service.

Google That “Seed Keyword” and add the top 10 URLs to a Google Sheet

It’s a very simple form of competitor analysis, get those top 10 URLs that currently rank for your target seed keyword.

Get the top 100 keyword those 10 urls rank for right now

You can use whatever keyword source you want, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Serpstat etc. or get it direct from Data For SEO. You want to get at least the top 100 keywords for each url. I find getting more than that can just add noise and bloat to your list, because few urls will hold more than 30-50 unique keyword rankings.

Add Those Keywords To A Sheet & Count Duplicates/Overlap

Boom! You’ve got a cluster of keywords, based on Google’s determination of relevance! Now the neat part is that you can use a Google Sheet formula to show the “overlap” or number of times those 10 different URLS all coranked for other terms outside of the “seed” keyword! This gives you a centrality you can use to gauge relevance.

Additionally, you can sort out brand names, competitor names and non-sense by reviewing and removing low overlap words!
